Introduction

Tsinghua University was selected and became one of the world’s 24 host institutions and China’s first one of the Amgen Scholars Program (ASP) in September 2018. Other ASP host institutions include top universities worldwide, such as Harvard University, Stanford University and University of Cambridge. Between July 1 and August 23, 2019, 15 Tsinghua University Amgen Scholars from top universities across the world completed an eight-week summer research training session at Tsinghua University. The Amgen Scholars Program at Tsinghua University selected 15 outstanding candidates globally. They were then assigned to volunteer tutors and deeply involved in frontier research in biomedicine at Tsinghua University laboratories under the mentorship of senior researchers, post-doctoral fellows and senior doctoral candidates. Thanks to many-to-one guidance, observation and practice, these young scholars were able to sharpen their experimental skills in a short period of time, laying a solid foundation for further education and advanced scientific training. In addition, Tsinghua University also provided opportunities for Amgen Scholars to exchange with Tsinghua students, participate in academic events, experience traditional Chinese culture, and attend workshops at the National University of Singapore.

Being selected for Amgen scholars program in Tsinghua University is like a dream come true for me.From very first moment landing to Beijing to now at the last few days looking back to all these beautiful learning and cultural experiences I gained are life changing one.

I really appreciated that, even before we got to Beijing, we had so much help in applying for a visa and booking flights. After getting to China, it was easy to feel at home as we were shown around campus together and took part in an opening ceremony. The program supervisors have been so kind and helpful and have helped make my experience in China one that I will not forget.

Through this amgen scholar  program, I literally gain insight into how to carry out scientific research like choosing a question we aim to investigate, proposing hypothesis and proving. Meanwhile, I meet lots of interesting friends from different academic and cultural backgrounds and we really have a good time here. Finally, wish all the best for this programme to help more and more young scholars in the future.

The Tsinghua Amgen Scholars program was an incredible experience that allowed me to immerse myself both in scientific research and Chinese culture. My fellow scholars were from all around the world, and I learned just as much from them as I did in the lab. They’re all incredible and I’m so grateful to have 14 new friends!

Participating in the 2022 Amgen Scholars program was a very enriching experience that not only gave me the basics to carry out independent lab work, but also introduced me to the wonderful world of scientific research. Thanks to this program, I got to know a new research field to me called synthetic biology, and learned some of the basics of protein design and engineering. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my PI, Professor Shuyi Zhang, and all the members of his lab for all the help they gave me during these two months and for allowing me to participate in their cutting-edge research in their field.
